The exam application fee, which includes the first exam attempt, is $510 for BICSI members and $725 for non-members. There is a separate retest fee if needed, which is $230 for BICSI members and $355 for non-members when testing at a Pearson VUE location. The passing score for the RTPM exam is determined by a psychometric analysis and standard-setting process conducted by ICT field experts. The BICSI RTPM exam is delivered in a computer-based testing format through Pearson VUE, and it is available with online proctoring. but online proctoring options are available in USA & Canada only.

Applicants must meet specific educational and/or work experience criteria. Options include one year of ICT project management experience plus a current BICSI credential (RCDD, DCDC, OSP, INSTC, INSTF, or TECH), two years of ICT project management experience, three years of ICT industry experience including one year managing ICT projects, or holding a current Project Management certification or degree in Project or Construction Management plus one year of ICT industry experience.

The exam covers key areas based on a job task analysis of the telecommunications project management profession. These areas include Project Initiation (such as gathering information, budget estimation, proposal orchestration, and deliverables – approximately 56% of the exam), Project Execution (administrative activities, implementation management, stakeholder communication – approximately 29%), and Project Closure (approximately 15%). Specific knowledge areas include integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risks, procurement, and stakeholders, as well as technical topics like cable and connector types, pathways and spaces, safety, and data centers.

The BICSI RTPM certification is valid for three complete calendar years.

The exam is a computer-based test consisting of 100 scored items. Question types include multiple choice, multiple response, and enhanced matching.

Recommended study materials include the Telecommunications Project Management Manual (TPMM), 1st or 2nd edition, and approximately 125+ hours of independent study. BICSI also offers courses like PM101, PM102, and PM103, though PM102 is recommended to enhance knowledge rather than being a test preparation course.
