For the computer-delivered exam, the total appointment time is four-and-a-half hours, with the exam time being 4 hours and 18 minutes. For the paper and pencil exam, the time is 4 hours.

The computer-delivered ASQ CMDA exam has 145 multiple-choice questions, of which 135 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest questions. The paper and pencil exam has 135 multiple-choice questions.

The passing score for the ASQ CMDA exam is 550 out of a possible 750 points.

The ASQ Certified Medical Device Auditor CMDA exam is available through online, remote proctoring (via Prometric ProProctor) as well as at Prometric test centers.

Candidates must have five years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the CMDA Body of Knowledge. At least one year of this experience must be in a decision-making position. Education can waive some of the experience requirement: an associate degree waives one year, a bachelor's degree waives three years, and a master's or doctorate waives four years (only one waiver can be claimed).

The CMDA exam covers the six major areas of the Body of Knowledge: Auditing Fundamentals; Auditing and Inspection Processes; Medical Device Quality Management System Requirements (including FDA 21 CFR 820, ISO 13485, EU MDR, and MDSAP); Quality Tools and Techniques; Management and Personnel; and Product and Process Controls (including Design Controls and Production and Process Controls).

The ASQ Certified Medical Device Auditor (CMDA) certification is valid for three years. To maintain certification, you must either retake the exam or earn 18 recertification units (RUs) through professional development activities.

The CMDA exam is a one-part, multiple-choice question exam. It is available in both computer-delivered and paper-and-pencil formats. All examinations are open book, and candidates must bring their own reference materials.

Recommended study materials include the ASQ CMDA Handbook, relevant FDA regulations and guidance documents, ISO 13485:2016, the ASQ Quality Press publications, and practice exam questions or question banks. Practical experience is also considered the best preparation.
