There are two required exams for the CHRL designation. The CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) registration fee is $412.45 (including HST). The CHRL Employment Law Exam registration fee is $271.20 (including HST). Exam fees for certifications vary by country and also influenced by local taxes and currency exchange rates.

The CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) has a time allotment of 5 hours. The CHRL Employment Law Exam has a time allotment of 3.5 hours.

The CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) comprises 250 multiple-choice questions, including 20-30 unscored test questions. The CHRL Employment Law Exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions, including 8-12 unscored test questions.

HRPA uses a Modified Angoff method to determine the cut score for its exams. For the CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE), a non-compensatory scoring method is used. This means candidates must not only meet an overall established cut score but also score above a specific threshold in each of the nine functional areas to pass. A low score in one area cannot be fully compensated by a high score in another. HRPA does not publish a fixed passing percentage for the CHRL Employment Law Exam, but historically, passing marks have ranged between 50% and 60%, determined by the Modified Angoff method.

Both the CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) and the CHRL Employment Law Exam are administered through computer-based testing and offer the option of remote online proctoring. This allows candidates to take the exam from a location of their choice, provided they meet the technical and environmental requirements.

To be eligible to write the CHRL exams, candidates must be an active registrant with HRPA and meet the coursework requirement. The coursework requirement involves successful completion of courses in nine specific HR subject areas with an average of 70% and no single course grade below 65%, or qualifying via the Alternate Route. Passing the CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) is required before you are eligible to write the CHRL Employment Law Exam. Additionally, obtaining the CHRL designation requires holding a university degree and demonstrating at least three years of professional-level HR experience.

The CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) is based on the HRPA Competency Framework and assesses academic knowledge across nine functional dimensions: Strategy, Professional Practice, Organizational Effectiveness, Workforce Planning & Talent Management, Labour & Employee Relations, Total Rewards, Learning & Development, Health, Wellness, and Safe Workplace, and Human Resources Metrics, Reporting, and Financial Management. The CHRL Employment Law Exam assesses understanding and application of Ontario employment and workplace law, covering topics such as Employment Contracts & Terminations, Employer Obligations, and Regulations and Legislation like the Employment Standards Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The CHRL certification itself does not expire, but maintaining the designation requires continuous membership in good standing with HRPA and meeting ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. The results of the CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) are valid for fifteen years, and the results of the CHRL Employment Law Exam are valid for ten years.

Both required exams, the CHRL Knowledge Exam (CHRL-KE) and the CHRL Employment Law Exam, are computer-based tests. The CHRL-KE consists of four-option multiple-choice questions. The CHRL Employment Law Exam consists of scenario-based, three-option multiple-choice questions.
